Good morning, Roanoke! It’s September 1st, and before we dive into what is going on in Roanoke, here’s a little Labor Day History for you. Back in 1881, when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railway chose to meet in a little village called Big Lick, everything changed. Thousands of railroad workers, carpenters, blacksmiths, and laborers poured in to build tracks, depots, roundhouses, and machine shops. It became the Roanoke that we call home today.

Now that your history fact is covered… time to fire up those grills. 🍔

🏠 Mabry Mill Gets A New Roof

After 4 months of work, the historic Mabry Mill has a new roof! The Historic Mabry Mill is a must-see stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway just south of Roanoke. The replacement was designed to resemble the original roof from the early 1900s, but it is expected to last another 20-25 years for all visitors.

🍦 POLL RESULTS: Where’s your go-to ice cream spot in Roanoke?

The results are in! Blue Cow Ice Cream took first place recieving 44% of all votes. Behind it Rookie’s came in second place recieving 33% of the votes. Thank you to everyone who participated. We plan on doing more polls like this in the near future.

We happen to agree, so after we saw the poll results we had to make sure to go out and get some Blue Cow Ice Cream for ourselves.

🍺 Hanging Rock Tavern Temporarily Closes

We have some sad news for the community as Hanging Rock Tavern has temporarily closed its doors. Hanging Rock provided an awesome atmosphere of live music, food, and drinks. They did make sure to note that this is temporary, so we will make sure to let you know when they plan to reopen.

This week’s spotlight goes to Hawke, a 10-month-old Shepherd mix at the Franklin County Humane Society. He’s goofy, lovable, and already a gentle giant in the making. With his big grin and belly-rub obsession, he’s just waiting for his forever family to scoop him up.

HOUSE OF THE WEEK

4630 Deer Trail Dr, Salem, VA 24153: There is something about a log-style cabin in the mountains that makes you feel like you are in Roanoke. This house will blow all of your guests away. Imagine sitting by one of the two gas fireplaces with your family around the holidays.
